• AVANT-GARDE CINEMA IN LOS ANGELES

In cinema history, Los Angeles is almost completely identified with the commercial film industry: Hollywood. The power of this association has caused the neglect of the rich and varied traditions of avant-garde, radical, populist, amateur and other forms of non-commercial cinema the city has nurtured. The seminar will discuss these histories and illustrate them with selected films.


• AVANT-GARDE FILM AND ROCK 'N' ROLL

Avant-garde film has often looked to other art forms for formal models as alternatives to the narrative feature: poetry, painting, and dance, for example, but especially music.

Until the early 1960s, jazz was the medium of reference for most of US culture, including painting, poetry and film. But since then, film has had a strong relationship with various forms of rock ‘n’ roll. The seminar will discuss the historical evolution of the relationship between film and popular music, and illustrate it with selected examples.
