Israeli delegations to Poland – who, what, why?
We see them in the streets of Warsaw, in the squares of Krakow. Unusual tourists, walking among us, and yet closed in their own world. Who are they, the participants of high-school delegations from Israel visiting Poland? What are they doing here? What do they know about the country they are visiting, and what is their attitude towards it? And what kind of views about the world, about the past, and about their own nation, do they obtain during the delegations? Based on research conducted among participants of such delegations, this presentation is meant to help us better understand this phenomenon.
Daniel Wolniewicz-Slomka graduated from the universities of Tel-Aviv and of Warsaw, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. His academic work focuses on collective memory in Israel and in Poland, with a special emphasis on memory of the Holocaust. His M.A. thesis, titled “Israeli high-school delegations to Poland and national identity” and written under the auspices of Prof. Szevach Weiss, has been awarded the Majer Bałaban prize for best M.A. dissertation on Judaism and Israel. It will serve as the basis for this presentation, which will be conducted in English, with the possibility of asking questions in Polish.

Znamy ich z warszawskich ulic. Nietypowi turyści, chodzący między nami, a jednak zamknięci we własnym świecie. Kim właściwie są uczestnicy izraelskich wycieczek szkolnych do Polski? Co tutaj robią? Jaki mają stosunek do Polski i do jej mieszkańców? Co wiedzą o miejscu, w którym są? I jaki jest wpływ tych wycieczek na ich spojrzenie na świat, na przeszłość i na własną tożsamość narodową? Autor opierając się na badaniach, przeprowadzonych wśród uczestników takich wycieczek, usiłuje lepiej zrozumieć ten wyjątkowy fenomen.
Daniel Wolniewicz-Slomka jest absolwentem Uniwersytetu w Tel-Awiwie i Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, obecnie doktorantem w Instytucie Filozofii i Socjologii Polskiej Akademii Nauk. W swojej pracy naukowej, zajmuje się pamięcią zbiorową w Polsce i w Izraelu, a w szczególności pamięcią Holokaustu. Jego praca magisterska, „Israeli high-school delegations to Poland and national identity”, napisana pod opieką Prof. Szewacha Weissa, została nagrodzona nagrodą im. Majera Bałabana za najlepszą pracę magisterską na temat Żydów i Izraela.

Seminarium odbędzie się 7 lutego o godz. 11:00. Wstęp wolny.
Wykład będzie prowadzony w języku angielskim.
